Phumowakhe Ndwandwe, 24, was sentenced to life in prison by Mtubatuba High Court for the murder of Detective Sergeant Sakhile Nsibande, who was killed in the line of duty in 2019.
Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo, a police spokesperson, stated that KwaMbonambi SAPS detectives conducted a raid at Cinci Reserve in search of Ndwandwe. He was wanted for house robbery and rape.

“Ndwandwe’s house was identified and surrounded by police. When Ndwandwe noticed that he was cornered he allegedly fired shots through the window and escaped.
“After that it was discovered that Sergeant Nsibande was shot he was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead on arrival,” he said.
A murder case was reported, and the case docket was assigned to Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime Investigation Hawks members.
Mhlongo said that on November 15, 2019, Empangeni Public Order Police, Crime Intelligence, KwaMbonambi detectives, and Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime Investigation conducted a joint operation.
“Ndwandwe was arrested in the Kwamsane area and found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
“His bail was successfully opposed and he was in custody until he was convicted in December last year,” Mhlongo added.
Ndwandwe was sentenced to life in prison for murder, 15 years in prison for house robbery, 15 years in prison for rape, and 15 years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition. His sentences will run in parallel.
Meanwhile, Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation members arrested three suspects aged 27 to 48 on Monday in Modimolle for possession of copper cables.
According to Police Captain Matimba Maluleke, the Hawks received a tip about the suspects who were in possession of copper cables in Modimolle and conducted an urgent sting operation as a result.
“A vehicle matching the description was spotted in town and pulled over.
“The suspects and the vehicle were thoroughly searched and copper cables with the estimated street value of R13 000 as well as R4 500 in cash were found.”
According to Maluleke, preliminary investigations by the Hawks revealed that the copper cables were bound for Gauteng.
“The suspects appeared in the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday facing charges relating to possession of copper cable and contravening the Immigration Act.
“The Hawks are still investigating to establish where the copper cables were coming from,” Maluleke added.
