Orlando Pirates were expected to announce the signing of Cameroonian striker Marou Souaibou after reports from the West African country emerged claiming the deal is complete.
The 21 year-old was named in Rigobert Song’s Indomitable Lions’ squad for the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar. He however failed to play in any of their three group stage matches.
According to kickoff442, Souaibou was to join Orlando Pirates in a deal worth $200 000 (R3.45 million) in January.
The publication however have since backtracked on their initial report…. Take a look at how the drama is unfolding below.
Orlando Pirates face European competition for African star
“Weeks after kick442 stumbled and reported on a concrete offer from Orlando Pirates for the services of Marou Souaibou, three European giants have entered the race for the signature of the player who had started discussing personal terms with the Bucs.” the publication reported.
“According to our sources, Belgian Jupiler Pro League side Standard Liege, Armenia Bielefield of the German Bundesliga and French Ligue 1 side Clermont Foot FC have established contact with related parties with the aim of securing the signature of the Cotonsport skipper.”
In other news, Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Richard Ofori looks set to extend his contract at the Buccaneers according to reports.
Though he’s struggled with injuries since joining the Bucs, when called upon the 29-year-old has been solid for his side.
Ofori has made 13 appearances for the Buccaneers this season, keeping seven clean sheets in the process. This includes two in their cup winning MTN8 run.
The Ghanaian shot-stopper narrowly missed out on a place in Ghana’s FIFA World Cup squad for Qatar due to injury after being named in their preliminary squad.
Star keeper to extend contract at Mayfair?
According to reports, the Mayfair based club are set to begin negotiations with Ofori whose contract comes to a close in June 2023.
“I think a lot of people know that Ofori’s contract is ending next year, so, obviously there has to be talks between the player and the management.” a Citizen report read.
“It has to happen soon because if you take time in such situations you might end up losing the player. He is the number one choice at the club and the management obviously want to keep him.”
The publication further claim that both Orlando Pirates FC and Richard Ofori’s camp are keen on an extension.
