The EFF has said that they will ask the DA, as the largest opposition party, to table a motion of no confidence against President Cyril Ramaphosa when Parliament meets on Tuesday and that if the DA is unable to do so, they will do so.
This was asserted by EFF leader Julius Malema during a press conference on Monday, as the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) deliberated on Ramaphosa’s future following the release of an independent panel’s report.
It concluded that the president may face impeachment after a theft of at least $580,000 (over R9 million) from a sofa at his Phala Phala game farm in Limpopo.
Malema expressed concern that the South African Reserve Bank, the Public Protector, and the SA Revenue Service had not yet released their reports on the Phala Phala scandal.
“Cyril must be removed as a matter of urgency because he violated his oath of office. Tomorrow, Members of Parliament must vote for the impeachment process to commence.
“We will ask the DA to table a motion of no confidence against the president before the sitting of the National Assembly. If not, the EFF will,” he said.
The report of the panel, according to the EFF’s leader, was “comprehensive and concise.” “This means that the judges understood the gravity of the matter. We reject the coordinated campaign by the media to discredit the report.”
Malema said that the ANC’s national working committee had decided that Ramaphosa must resign, but that ANC MP must not vote for his impeachment to protect his benefits and perks as a former president.
He challenged the NEC and parliamentary members – Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Lindiwe Sisulu, and Supra Mahumapelo – to vote tomorrow on Ramaphosa’s impeachment (Tuesday). Malema expressed satisfaction that Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula did not grant a request for a secret ballot.
“They (Dlamini-Zuma, Sisulu and Mahumapelo) must raise their hands sitting next to the man. They must dare repeat what they have been saying (on social media) where it matters the most,” Malema said.
Malema has backed Deputy President David Mabuza to succeed as president, claiming that fear is being spread around his name because he was not captured by the Oppenheimers.
He described Mabuza as a man of integrity because he refused to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament and deputy president after the ANC’s integrity commission questioned his eligibility due to corruption allegations.
“We have been told DD is a murderer. DD is corrupt, but there is no evidence. We are told that we must be scared of the man.
“The fearmongering we are experiencing is because DD is not captured by the establishment. If Ramaphosa is clean, why did he appoint DD as a deputy president?” Malema said.
“DD is a man of integrity. DD told the integrity commission that if ‘I am corrupt, don’t swear me as a Member of Parliament and deputy president’. DD is likely to deliver the Christmas message as president.”
Malema indicated that ANC veteran Mathews Phosa should not defend Ramaphosa’s crime because he dislikes Mabuza. Mabuza is Phosa’s protégé, and when the latter was Mpumalanga’s premier in the late 1990s, he appointed Mabuza to his cabinet.
They later had a major fallout. Mabuza sued Phosa for defamation of character after Phosa allegedly sent an intelligence report to ANC officials claiming that Mabuza was an apartheid spy. Phosa was victorious in the case.
