Tunisia legend Wahbi Khazri has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 31 after their 2022 FIFA World Cup exit.
The Montpellier forward scored the goal in the historic 1-0 win over reigning World Champions France but it wasn’t enough to see them through to the last 16.
It could be argued that the result masked some of the major challenges the Carthage Eagles have faced during their preparation for the global showpiece, but Khazri’s decision does not.
The North Africans have often been accused of maladministration that’s left plenty of their key figures disgruntled – but Khazri bows out with his head held high.
Three goals in his five World Cup appearances rank him as their record scorer at the global showpiece
“I am proud of what I gave my country over the past years, and I believe that the future for this generation is bright,” Khazri told beIN Sports France.
“After the match, and in a meeting that included all the players and the technical and administrative staff, I told everyone that this moment is appropriate, and I thanked everyone and wished them success.
“To beat France, to score and be decisive, that is more beautiful,” he concluded over scoring against the country of his birth.
The former Sunderland forward bows out with 25 goals and 14 assists in 74 caps for the Carthage Eagles since his debut nine years ago.
