Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou
has relived the tragic injury that had
doctors fearing for the worst regarding
his football career.
At the start of the season Matlou secured
a big move to Chiefs from Swallows, but
his dreams of making it as a professional
footballer nearly disappeared before his
eyes.
Whilst still a scholar, the 24-year-old
suffered a freak career-threatening injury
which posed a threat to his career before
it had even kicked off.
We were playing a tournament called
Metropolitan, which is a school
tournament. We were playing in Pimville
at the Nike Centre. In the first five
minutes of the game, they passed me the
ball on my left-hand side. I pushed the
ball once and the second time I pushed it
to my right-hand side, trying to cut inside,
no one kicked me I was alone, so I just
heard the sound of a bone breaking,
Matlou told KC TV.
“While I was on the ground, I tried to
move my feet, but I could hear the bones
were touching each other,” he said.
Matlou expressed his gratitude towards a
local life coach who motivated him not to
give up despite bleak feedback from the
hospital regarding his injury.
“I would say Rhulani Mabasa is the one
who told me not to give up. I had a nail
in my leg] so I slept alone. I thought I
wouldn’t play football again because
that’s what they said at the hospital. It
was not an accident. I was on the ground.
“When I thought of that, I remembered
Rhulani once said to me “never give up” I
worked hard to be where I am today,” an
emotional Matlou said..
Matlou has once again battled with injury
this season, which has seen him make
just eight appearances in all competitions
for coach Arthur Zwane’s side.
