Some white South Africans are now boycotting Dis-Chem because of its decision to impose a moratorium on white people’s appointment, including promotions. In a letter to senior management dated September 19, the CEO of the pharmaceutical retailer, Ivan Saltzman, announced the moratorium, stating that they had reviewed their Employment Equity profile and discovered that there had not been enough effective transformation within the organisation.
“Remember, we are growing at a fast rate and a few appointments other than white don’t cut it. It’s the ratio between white and black that counts. So, when no suitable black candidate is found, and a white is appointed, we need several blacks just to maintain the status quo, never mind moving forward,” said Saltzman.

Ivan Saltzman, CEO of Dis-Chem, says the moratorium on hiring white people and other measures are necessary if the company is to remain profitable and avoid a 10% turnover fine, which would cripple the business.
A backlash has erupted in response to Saltzman’s letter, which has been labelled racist toward white people. The letter was widely circulated on Twitter, prompting the DA’s Helen Zille to question its authenticity.
“Hermann, I am sure this is a fake letter. No CEO would write so sloppily, and have such poor grammar and syntax. If it is real then Dischem will soon see the consequences of this type of racism in the business outcomes. They deserve whatever comes their way,” Zille wrote on the app.
Another Twitter user wrote: “Idk why white people are so pressed about this Dischem thing. Literally most white people I know either won’t be caught dead working retail or simply don’t HAVE to work retail. Funny, that whole privilege thing.”
White people are threatening to sell their Dischem shares. Let’s buy them.

Sold my @Dischem shares and will not be supporting them in future.

Cheers, @Dischem. You won’t be seeing me again. Been a loyal customer for a long time. But I have a problem doing business with racists. pic.twitter.com/k3zWZTWFZo

So white people also hate racism ooh… okay💀 they are threatening to stop buying from Dischem , even created a hashtag😅 South Africa is such a funny place.

The real issue is not Dischem
It’s the fact such racially discriminatory legislation and policy is allowed to exist in the first place

Hi my name is Reiner. I was born in 1996. I am being discriminated against by big corporations and the government on the basis of my skin colour. @Dischem pic.twitter.com/hns4xnBoN4

The Dischem boycott will last about as long as a UK chancellor.
No self-respecting white person will take a 3-minute walk across a mall to make a political point.
That shit’s for Twitter.

Hi @Dischem since you’re so averse to white people, please be reassured that I’ll do all my shopping elsewhere going forward. And shall strongly encourage all I meet to do the same. Thanks pic.twitter.com/063d9fOQWG

So @Dischem distributed a letter saying if you’re white you can’t be promoted and that white appointments should be stopped. Black & white people are spoken of as tokens to money. Only after leaked did they retract it. The BEE legacy! CEO Ivan Saltzman, you should be ashamed. pic.twitter.com/9wBpLVWDu8

Dischem is the tip of the iceberg. These discussions of “no more white male promotions or hires until our equity is correct” are happening everywhere in the private sector. Impacted me personally. https://t.co/0OsdrMpXsV

The Dischem pushback sounds like a bit of madness. The Saltzman family made about R2.5bn from a transaction involving the Royal Bafokeng Family & Sandile Zungu. The Bafokeng are among some of the most progressive industry players. Of course transformation must happen.

Can’t imagine a reason why anyone would shop at Dischem. They were fined for inflating the costs of basic face masks, happily enforced vaccine apartheid, and now bluntly state their intent to aggressively follow racist edicts.
Just take your money elsewhere.
