Arthur Zwane has revealed the plan Kaizer Chiefs prepared to fight for the DStv Premiership title this season but admits they are now lagging behind on their set targets.
Chiefs have endured a stuttering start to the 2022/23 campaign with two wins, one draw and three defeats from their opening six league games, which sees them trail league leaders Richards Bay by six points – albeit them having played a game more.
As they sit in 13th place following the 0-0 draw with second-placed AmaZulu at FNB Stadium this past weekend, Zwane opened up on the plans to target a certain amount of points in three sections of the league, broken down into 10 games sectors – with 30 games overall to be played.
In every 10 games, they were looking at an overall total of 21 points, which traditionally would put them firmly in contention for the title race, come the end of the season.
“We targeted 21 points in 10 games. When you analyse our league, in 30 games if you get 21, 21, 21 – you get 63 points and the chances are huge that you would be competing or you will be up [there],” Zwane said.
“Unfortunately at the moment, when you look at… especially this game after we told ourselves that we needed to make sure to win this one. It would have given us the opportunity to collect the [points in] the remaining four games to get to 21.
“So that means we’re two points short in terms of reaching our target. So we’re going to have to dig deeper, you know. I can’t falter the performance [against AmaZulu], I think the boys did their best, they just didn’t have the killer instinct to kill the game off.
“I think we can learn from this one and focus more on the positives that helped us nearly get the maximum points. Unfortunately, we couldn’t but I think we can learn a lot in terms of the positives that can help us going forward.”
Chiefs now turn their attention to bottom-placed Marumo Gallants on Sunday afternoon – who have started the new season without a win yet.
