The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 wind and waves warning for the Eastern Cape on Sunday, 4 September.
WEATHER WARNING FOR EASTERN CAPE
The weather warning is valid from 6:00 on Monday until 12:00 on Tuesday, 6 September. The inclement weather is the result of the cold front passing over South Africa, which is expected to start slipping south of the country.
A ridging high-pressure system is expected to follow the cold front, “resulting in gale force westerly to south-westerly winds offshore,” said the weather service.
The strong winds will lead to choppy waves of at least six metres between Plettenberg Bay and Algoa Bay from mid-morning. Later, it will spread to East London. “The waves will subside Tuesday afternoon.”
The potential impacts of the weather include:
- Localised disruption of beachfront activities.
- Localised disruption of small harbours and ports.
- Difficulty navigating/hampered progress at sea for vessels.
- Small vessels are at risk of taking on water and capsizing.
