SAFA have confirmed a changed Bafana Bafana squad who will face Angola on Sunday, as they look to overturn a 2-0 scoreline in the second leg of their CHAN qualifier.
Angola picked up a 2-0 win away last week, and Helman Mkhalele’s quickly-assembled team will need to score at least twice if they want to qualify for next year’s finals in Algeria.
With the matches not falling on FIFA dates, clubs have not been obliged to release players, and there have been nine changes to the squad who played last week.
Some of the new faces in this week’s squad include experienced Sundowns players Mosa Lebusa, Mothobi Mvala and Thabiso Kutumela.
“We are looking forward to tomorrow’s game and we are hoping to overturn the 2-0 deficit we conceded and fight our way to qualify for 2023 CHAN tournament,” Mkhalele told SAFA media.
“It is not going to be an easy challenge because today will count as the first time having a full squad training together, having reconvened this past Thursday. We will use this time to do everything in our power to ready the team and push for the desired result.
“This is the sad part and a reality that we’ll have to deal with right here at home because teams are not obliged to release players…. These CHAN qualifiers are played outside the FIFA/CAF calendar.
“Be that as it may, we were hoping to get some cooperation from our clubs to release some of their unused players on time. We do not blame the teams but one would have thought, looking at were Bafana Bafana is now, that we would pull together in rebuilding the Bafana Bafana brand to a level we all believe it could be in. I really was hoping for some form of compromise (from the clubs).”
