Afrobeats musician and actress Moneoa Moshesh broke the internet earlier this month when she revealed alleged abuse at the hands of her ex boyfriend and businessman Phiwe Maphanga now the pair have taken their fight to court.
In the latest development the singer was summoned to the police station on Thursday to give a statement in response to allegations made by Mr Phiwe, who laid criminal charges of extortion and intimidation against her at the Sandton police station.
“We are taken aback by these allegations, because they lack merit and are unfounded. We haven’t gone through the contents of the docket, basically it relates to the recent events where Moneoa had an Instagram live and shared her trauma and ordeal over the years , so the gentleman alleges that Moneoa was trying to extort money from him said her lawyer and director at Buang Jones Attorneys, Buang Jones.
In response Moneoa laid two charges against her ex on Friday: theft and use of vehicle without owner’s permission.
Her lawyer said she (Moneoa) was made aware earlier this week and was invited to go to the police station and where he alleged the police’s conduct towards Moneoa left much to be desired which resulted them in opening the case of intimidation.
He said they intended to report the police to Ipid.
“They have not yet investigated the matter thoroughly to come to any conclusion, they have no right to demand what they demanded on Thursday. We found their conduct unbecoming, their conduct in our view is unethical that is why we intend to approach Ipid to review the conduct of these police officers.”
Moneoa said she wasn’t shocked when she found out her ex opened a case against her and said she opened hers because she had no choice.
“I’ve been wanting to do this for quite a while, but I always felt nervous…I don’t harbour any ill intentions against him but how else am I going to get my things back, what choice has he left me. He needs to be taught a lesson so that he stops defrauding people and playing with people’s livelihoods. He has been doing this for too long enough, is enough.”
“Its still new for now, I just got my case numbers and I have a very reliable sergeant that I’m working with. Sgt Norman Sithole from Norwood, he is the first police officer that has been so helpful and so invested in helping me in this situation. I don’t know how many times I’ve gone to open a case and when they ran my finger prints those cases didn’t appear on the database.”
Moneoa said she was told on many occasions she did not have a case because she voluntarily gave Phiwe her car however she maintains she only gave him the car to fix.
Phiwe confirmed opening the case, but chose not to comment about what Moneoa said on social media.
“I did open a case of extortion and intimidation and there’s a protection order against her for all the harassment that she has caused me over there cause of the years , but I have no intention of going public on my end in particular the issues emanating from what happened last week because there’s legal recourse that we can pursue on the matter and I’m just pursuing it legally nothing else and I believe , I have no other view other than I believe firmly in the fact that justice must be served.
“I know for one that the allegations are untrue, so we don’t have any legal recourse you know, particularly as men being in women’s month. I mean whoever comes out with their version of the truth first is more likely to be the one riding the white horse. But it has affected me fortunately for me I know there is provision within the law to pursue legal action against such hence I’ve chosen to go that route, and because my case is substantial enough against negative or untrue allegations.”
At the moment a court date has not yet been set as police still need to investigate . TshisaLIVE can confirm and has seen documentation that Phiwe opened an interim protection order against the singer and filed these charges against her.
