SASOLBURG – A 64-year-old woman is out on warning after she was arrested and charged under the Electoral Act 73 of 1998 which prohibits the unlawful removal and defacing of poster published by a registered party.
This is after a case of contravention of the Electoral Act was opened at Sasolburg Police after an elderly woman was allegedly seen removing already placed posters of a particular political party from street poles.
When asked why the woman removed two other posters she said the ANC is rubbish.
In a statement police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said by law the removal of election posters is illegal and can be considered vandalism or tampering with campaign materials.
“It is essential to respect the democratic process and allow political parties and candidates to display their materials as permitted by law.”
ANC Fezile Dabi Regional spokesperson, Sello Pietersen condemned the vandalism of their election posters.
“She committed this blatant criminal act against the advice given to her on the possible consequences of her actions by our volunteers. Indicating her fragrant disregard of the constitutional right of the ANC to campaign and contest elections in a free and fair political adtmosphere.”
Pietersen said many ANC posters in Sasolburg have been vandalized and the ANC will continue to use legal means to report and deal with those involved.
Investigation in this matter is ongoing and the 64-year-old was released through police warning and warned to appear in court on Wednesday, May 22.
