Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has given a further update on the condition of Makhehleni Makhaula after the midfielder needed emergency treatment on the pitch.
Makhaula went down clutching his side near the end of the first half, but while getting treatment seemed to lose consciousness. Medical staff rushed to his assistance before he was taken off for further evaluation.
It was a scary moment for all who witnessed it, including Riveiro and the Pirates bench.
“It was a shocking moment for all of us,” Riveiro said at the post match press conference.
“Obviously one of those situations that you sometimes unfortunately you have the opportunity to live yourself close. We used to see it in TV sometimes and today was our chance to have that feeling and I can tell you is not nice.
“But thanks to the doctors and and the technical assistance I think they managed to to stabilise him because there was a difficult moment, that’s what I heard.
“What I know is that he’s in the hospital, he’s in good hands, he’s in observation. I guess the club will tell you something. Tonight I guess to say more details is a personal thing.
“So what I can tell you right now, even though I didn’t have the opportunity to speak to Makhaula is that it’s okay.”
