Orlando Pirates secured a good 4-0 win over ten-man Hungry Lions in their last-16 Nedbank Cup clash at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.
It wasn’t a classic affair at eSgodini by any stretch of the imagination with Pirates going into the break one goal ahead but with no shots on target.
Relebohile Mofokeng forced an own goal from Morena Monaheng after 20 minutes and despite Pirates bossing possession they rarely made much of it to test Glen Baadjies.
The South Africa youth international looked rather comfortable throughout and to Pirates credit, so did Melusi Buthelezi as the visitors were relying on odd breaks on the counter.
And Pirates went on to take control in the second half despite a disturbing moment just before the break when Makhalene Makhaula looked to have passed out before being stretchered off with medical assistance.
There were some insisting changes in the second half with Kabelo Dlamini and Deon Hotto both grabbing assists shortly after coming on for Tshegofatso Mabasa and Monnapule Saleng’s goals respectively profiting from Lions going down to ten men as S’Bongakonke Yamkela Gamede was punished for bringing down Patrick Maswanganyi clean through on goal.
It started a barrage of attacks on the second-tier side and Baadtjies goals and just before the final whistle Mabasa added the fourth, a cracker into the top left corner as the Buccaneers marched into the last-eight of the competition.
