In a recent council meeting chaos in Ekurhuleni, a video captured the moment when an Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor stole the phone of the city’s mayor, Sivuyile Ngodwana. The incident occurred during a physical altercation involving EFF and African National Congress (ANC) councillors.
The clash erupted when Council Speaker Nthabiseng Tshivhenga recognised an ANC councillor to take the podium instead of an EFF representative. This decision sparked outrage among the EFF members, leading to a heated confrontation. Objects were thrown around, and amidst the chaos, the EFF councillor managed to snatch the mayor’s phone.

The tension escalated further when a water bottle was thrown, hitting Council Speaker Tshivhenga, who subsequently exited the building. The brawl unfolded just before a scheduled vote of no confidence against Mayor Ngodwana. The motion, originally tabled by ActionSA, has gained support from the ANC.
This incident highlights the intense political rivalries and divisions within the Ekurhuleni Council. The video footage serves as evidence of the volatile atmosphere that often characterises these meetings. Such disruptions not only hinder the efficient functioning of local government but also undermine public trust in the elected representatives.

The EMPD managed to track the phone and it was found in the councillor’s possession and seized. The Mayor has not opened a case as yet.

As investigations into the incident continue, it is essential for all political parties involved to reflect on their conduct and prioritise constructive dialogue and collaboration. The council’s primary focus should be on serving the interests of the community and finding common ground to address the challenges facing the city.
