MEYERTON. – A 52-year-old suspect was arrested for attempted murder following an incident in Sicelo where a 23-year-old victim was brutally attacked and his motionless body left in the middle of Sabelo Phama Street.
The incident happened on Sunday, 5 November 2023.
The victim was accused of stealing; however, no case docket was registered with the police and no complainant came forward for the alleged crime committed.
According to Tlaleng Moloi, a spokesperson for the police in Meyerton, the victim gained conscious after more than few days in the intensive care unit of a local hospital.
The victim disclosed that he was from Tembisa, and that he had bought new clothing for his soon to be born child.
As he was walking in Sicelo he noticed two African males jumping from a certain house and running away.
Subsequently, about four people came out of the same house and approached him, alleging that he stole the clothing he had in his bag pac k.
They started assaulting him, then a group of other assailants joined them.
The victim lost his phone and undisclosed amount of money he had in his possession during the attack.
According to Moloi, thepossibly of more arrests cannot be ruled out as the investigation is ongoing.
The Station Commander of Meyerton Police Station, Colonel Senzangakhona Christopher Mohale, pleaded with community members to join in the fight against crime by working hand-in-hand with the police through legitimate structures like Community Police Forums in their respective areas.
“Whenever anyone has committed a crime, community members have the responsibility to report such incidents to the authorities. We had incidents of vigilantism whereby victims were assaulted whilst others were killed for mere allegations and crimes they did not even commit.
“Assaulting someone who is suspected to have committed an offence, is as much criminal as the actions of the suspected person,” Mohale emphasised.
The suspect will appear in magistrate court soon.
