TAXI STRIKE VIOLENCE CAUGHT ON CAMERA
Taxi operators are at loggerheads with the City of Cape Town after law enforcement impounded several taxis last week. Violence took place in the CBD and has since spilled over into townships such as Khayelitsha and Masiphumelele.
Capetonian Luqmaan Abrahams and his daughter were lucky to walk away unscathed from a terrifying incident related to the taxi strike that occurred on Tuesday, 7 August.
Abrahams wrote on his Facebook post: “This incident took place this morning, 07 Aug 2023, just after 7am (somewhere between 7h10 and 7h30, my recollection skills hasn’t been great today).”
Abrahams said: “I’m super grateful neither of us got physically hurt and playing this video back, I realise that things could have gone very bad, very fast.”
THE PROTESTS HAVE HAD A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE CITY, WITH OVER 800 000 LEARNERS UNABLE TO ATTEND SCHOOL
According to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), over 850 000 learners were unable to attend school on Tuesday, 7 August.
These learners were either directly or indirectly affected by the taxi strike.
WCED MEC David Maynier said the affected schools were part of the metro north, metro east, and metro south education districts. The department recorded over 17 000 teachers across the province unable to attend to their posts due to the taxi strike.
