Three human trafficking suspects have been apprehended by local authorities and have successfully rescued three Thai women who were being held for sexual exploitation in a residence located in Garsfontein, east of Pretoria.
The Hawks, a specialized crime-fighting unit, were alerted to the distressing situation when one of the victims managed to escape and promptly reported her ordeal to the Thai Embassy, revealing her captivity for sexual exploitation.
This vital information prompted law enforcement and social services to intervene immediately.
Colonel Katlego Mogale, the spokesperson for the Hawks, stated, “Upon receiving the information, we swiftly made contact with one of the victims who was still being held against her will at the premises.”
With the collaboration of the Hawks’ serious organized crime investigation team, supported by the Tshwane Metro Police Department’s K9 unit and the SAPS Pretoria K9 unit, they gained access to the location and successfully rescued two additional victims.
The suspects will soon face charges of trafficking in persons in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, as announced by Mogale.
The joint team, led by Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, the provincial head of the Hawks in Gauteng, has been commended for their outstanding efforts in both rescuing the women and apprehending the alleged perpetrators.
