A man from North West has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his pregnant wife in October of last year.
He committed this heinous act because she was unable to provide him with money.
The Taung Regional Court in North West handed down the verdict against Thapelo Mojaki, aged 46, on Tuesday.
According to Henry Mamothame, the spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, the couple’s two children, aged 16 and 18, were present in Kolong village, Taung, when their father fatally stabbed their pregnant mother.
The tragic incident occurred as they were accompanying her to catch a taxi to work.
Mojaki approached his wife to request money, and upon learning that she had none, he resorted to using sheep-shearing scissors to repeatedly stab her, resulting in her immediate death.
The following day, Mojaki was arrested, and the court denied him bail.
Tecia Khula, the prosecutor, urged the court to impose the prescribed minimum sentence, emphasizing the emotional trauma inflicted on the couple’s children due to the murder.
Magistrate Buti Zulu remarked that the man should have protected his family instead of subjecting them to such a crime.
Mamothame stated that Rachel Makhari, the provincial Director of Public Prosecutions, and Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena, the police commissioner, expressed approval of the sentence and commended the officials involved in the case.
They also called on communities to take a firm stand against gender-based violence and femicide.
