A 40-year-old street hawker sold his goods for the last time at the traffic light after he was fatally knocked down by a minibus taxi in the Thembisa area, east of Johannesburg.
WHERE WAS THE STREET HAWKER EXACTLY KNOCKED DOWN?
It is reported that on Wednesday, 12 July 2023 at around 17:00, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Thembisa Precinct Officers, attended to an accident in the Phomolong section of Thembisa area, where a 40-year-old street hawker was fatally knocked down.
“Members swiftly responded to the location on Andrew Mapheto Drive near Birchacres Mall. On arrival, the Officers found the 40-year-old male victim, lying motionless on the road,” EMPD reported.
“The paramedics were called, and certified him dead on the scene.”

WHAT THE DECEASED SOLD FOR A LIVING
It is alleged that the deceased was a street hawker who sold items at the traffic light, such as steel wool, caps, socks, and cellphone chargers, when he was struck by a white Toyota Quantum minibus taxi.
EMPD also reports that the 30-year-old male driver of a minibus taxi, who was alone during the accident, was travelling from Malboro to Kempton Park, and sustained no injuries.
“The case of culpable homicide was opened at the Rabasotho Police Station. Although no arrest has been made, the investigations are ongoing,” EMPD confirmed.
NINE PASSENGERS WERE KILLED AT THE SCENE OF THE COLLISION
Meanwhile, nine people were killed after a minibus taxi and long-distance bus collision in the Eastern Cape last month (Sunday, 4 June).
Reporting on this tragedy, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport confirmed multi fatalities in excess of 9 people in a head-on collision involving a minibus taxi and one of the long-distance buses.
The accident occurred on the R61 between Flagstaff and Lusikisiki, according to the Eastern Department of Transport.
